Restaurants in Portimao

Portimao Arade
Clara Campos

The offer of restaurants in Portimao serving good food is many and varied. Yet, as in many all fishing cities, fresh fish is the highlight of local gastronomy.

Restaurants in Portimao are wonderful. They offer a service as good as the hotels in Portimao so that you may have memorable holidays.

Fresh fish is the highlight of local gastronomy as it happens in most cities and villages along the Algarve’s coast.
During your stay you will have much to see and do in Portimao; however, on what it comes to gastronomy I suggest you take the most out of this privileged relationship between the city and the sea. Enjoy as much fish and seafood dishes you can. The list of available options is endless but don’t forget to taste the grilled sardines as they are a symbol of Portimao. There is even a Sardine Festival usually held during the first half of August.
The Algarve’s gastronomy is also famed for its desserts and Portimao is a wonderful place to taste delicacies like Don Rodrigos or carob cake, for instance. I am sure that these desserts will make your holidays even sweeter!

My favourite restaurants in Portimao

Portimao is one of the most famed spots of the Algarve and is highly popular among tourists for the beauty of its beaches.
Portimao is mainly a summer tourist destination, although the pleasant climate throughout the all year makes it appealing also in spring, autumn and even in winter. Of course that the region is much more quiet off the high season, namely July and August. In fact, my favourite months to visit Portimão – and the all Algarve for that matters – are June and Septtember, when the weather is magnificent and the beaches are much less crowded.
Portimao is also known for the tasty gastronomy served at local restaurants. Tourists praise the freshness of the fish and seafood and consider it one of Portimao’s highlights. More and more tourists come not just to Portimao but also to the all Algarve for the amazing and distinctive gastronomy of the region.
Here is the list of my top 5 restaurants in Portimao to taste the magnificent local dishes.

Ababuja restaurantÀbabuja

Address: Zona Ribeirinha de Alvor, nº 11

8500 Alvor

Phone: +351 282 458 979

E-mail: restaurante_ababuja@hotmail.com

Àbabuja opened in 1992. Since then is one of my favourite restaurants in Portimao. Ábabuja was born out of the dream of one of its owners. It is one of the best places to eat fresh fish. The restaurant is also renowned for its homemade cakes. Do not miss the carob cake!

Carvi RestaurantCarvi

Address: Rua Direita, 34-A
8500 Portimao
Phone: +351 282 417 912

Carvi offers traditional Portuguese food. Cataplana, Pork with clams and Prawns Curry are my favourite dishes from the menu.

This restaurant serves meals late in the evening so you can have dinner here at 11pm!

Lusana restaurantLusana Restaurant

Address: Rua Doutor José Joaquim Nunes, 6

8500-663 Portimão

Phone: +351 282 483 062

This restaurant is situated in the historic center of Portimão and it is the right place to go to enjoy the good local gastronomy. Lusana’s fish soup is truly divine. And the Tuna Steak is memorable!

However, Lusana Restaurant has more to offer than delicious dishes and great staff, always glad to help. For instance, every now and then, the restaurant organizes Fado and Jazz Evenings for the delight of their clients.

Tipoia restaurantTipóia restaurant

Address: Rua Sra. da Tocha, nº. 10

8500 Portimão

Phone: +351 282 426 118

As said, restaurants in Portimao are famed for their seafood.
However, there are other options besides fish and Tipóia restaurant is surely one of them.
At this restaurant you have the opportunity to enjoy remarkable Portuguese meat dishes.
Amongst other tasty options, I would strongly suggest the duck rice or the roasted lamb from the menu.
I consider the decoration of Tipóia one of the other reasons why this restaurant is worthy of a visit. I love the wood ceiling as it brings a traditional touch to the place.

Sal Fogo restaurantSal & Fogo

Address: Avenida Dom Afonso Henriques, Edif. Fábrica

8500 Portimão

Phone: +351 282 419 600

This is a recent restaurant. Yet, has already conquered my heart. Its modern decoration in black and red conquered me. The friendliness of the staff is absolutely unique. But Sal & Fogo also conquered my stomach. The grilled fish is delicious. The meat dishes are magnificent.
