Regaleira, mysticism in Sintra - All About Portugal

Regaleira, mysticism in Sintra
Clara Campos

Regaleira is a magnificent example of the mystery that surrounds Sintra, presenting esoteric and mystic symbols throughout the all property

On the outskirts of Sintra is one of the most magical and mysterious places you will ever visit: Quinta da Regaleira.

This amazing property depicts as no other the esoteric and enigmatic aura of Sintra; to fully enjoy it you should feel it and let you be carried away by its mysticism more than just visiting it.

Different landlords owned the lands where Regaleira stands nowadays. In 1840 the daughter of a rich man from Oporto, who later received the title of Viscountess of Regaleira, bought them and ordered the construction of a country manor.

Yet today’s Regaleira only exists due to the imagination of its next owner: António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, whose nickname was Moneybags Monteiro because of his fortune.

The Italian set-designer and architect Luigi Manini carried out the eccentric ideas of Moneybags Monteiro and Regaleira was constructed between 1904 and 1910, during the final years of the Monarchy. From the genius of these two men, a palace surrounded by luxuriant gardens, caves, lakes and enigmatic buildings, including a Roman Catholic church, which recall alchemy symbols used by the Masonry, the Rosicrucian’s and the Knights Templar, was born under an architectonic style that combines romantic, gothic, renaissance and manueline traces.

However, you will fell the mysticism of Regaleira is at its peak when coming down its impressive initiation well that ends on an eight point star – it is as if you are descending towards the centre of the Earth! The way out is made by a labyrinth of caves that will bring you to an amazing set of remarkable lakes and green vegetation.

Nowadays this one of a kind property offers several cultural and leisure activities, a restaurant and a cafe with an outdoor patio, as well as a museum shop.
