Portuguese restaurants with Michelin Stars

This week were announced the Portuguese restaurants with Michelin Stars in 2013. The guide awarded 2 restaurants with 2 stars and 9 restaurants with one star.

On the 2013 edition of the Michelin Guide were distinguished 11 Portuguese restaurants. The awards were announced in Madrid by Michael Ellis, the world main director of Michelin Guide, and by Mayte Carreño, responsible for Spain and Portugal.

As it happened on the former edition the restaurant Ocean, commanded by chef Hans Neuner, and Vila Joya, under the orders of chef Dieter Koshina, were rewarded with two Michelin Stars. Both restaurants are in the Algarve, namely in Lagoa and Albufeira respectively.

Willie’s (Vilamoura), São Gabriel e Henrique Reis (ambos em Almancil), Il Gallo d’Oro (Funchal), Casa da Calçada (Amarante) e Fortaleza do Guincho (Cascais) restaurants kept the star that had been already renewed this year.

The Yeatman from Chef Ricardo Costa in Vila Nova de Gaia and Feitoria from Chef Cordeiro in Lisbon also renewed the star they had been given in 2012.

However the biggest surprise, or not attending to the quality of the Chef, is the star awarded to Belcanto, the Lisbon restaurant headed by Chef José Avillez, on its first nomination.

Sadly, two Portuguese restaurants lost their stars this edition. They are Arcadas da Capela, in Coimbra, and Tavares, from Chef Aimé Barroyer, located in Lisbon.

In Spain

Michelin Guide awarded 159 restaurants in Spain; seven achieved the three stars, being two of them new. 19 restaurants got two stars (two of them for the first time) and 133 were distinguished with one star.

In 2014 five more restaurants may be given a star as the Michelin guide considers them as “Restaurants in the 2013 guide that could be awarded a star”.
