Portugal has more palaces than you can storm in a short trip, but one family makes a noble effort
You go on vacation, you pack a book or two, right? So I dutifully tossed my copy of Nick Tosches’ I’m-told-brilliant biography of Jerry Lee Lewis, Hellfire, into my carry-on bound for Portugal, a destination I’d been promised would include visits to quiet beaches, reclining by the poolside of a rented villa and lounging, lots of lounging.
So where did all these palaces come from?
One after the other, day after day, palaces, castles, another palace, another castle. Sounds like quite the hardship, doesn’t it? But I really wanted to read that book …
