Porto Moniz, an unforgettable place - All About Portugal

Porto Moniz, an unforgettable place
Clara Campos

Porto Moniz is an unforgettable place, famed for its volcanic rocks pools and its amazing natural beauty, just 35 minutes away from Funchal.

Porto Moniz is part of every touristic itinerary of Madeira island. Looking from the belvedere on the top of the road I understood why. The scenery is worthy of a postcard: an amazingly green hillside stretching down to a charming small town by the deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, with the famed volcanic rock pools standing out.

Overwhelmed by the splendor of the view, I allowed myself to stay on that marvelous balcony, feeling a sense of peace overcoming me. Then I knew that Porto Moniz is one of those memorable places that should be enjoyed slowly, so that the smell of the sea, the smiles of the people, the profound dark color of the volcanic rocks and the vibrant green of the vegetation may be carved on your memory for ever.

Porto Moniz may be a small municipality on the northern part of the Madeira Island but has plenty of arguments for a great day. On top of the list are its unique natural pools. For a euro per person you may swim on the Atlantic Ocean, inside a labyrinth formed by volcanic rocks that recalls the volcanic origins of the island.

Not far is another main attraction of Porto Moniz, namely the Aquário da Madeira (Madeira Aquarium), settled on Forte S. João Baptista (Saint John the Baptist Fort), recently restored. The Aquário houses more than 70 sea species, among which are sharks, rays, octopuses and groupers.

Nearby is local Centro de Ciência Viva (Living Science Centre) devoted to Madeira’s laurissilva forest. Here you may discover interactively of this natural treasure, considered a world heritage nature site by UNESCO. Learn more at http://www.portomoniz.cienciaviva.pt

Porto Moniz is also synonym for excellent food. Bolo do caco, fried mackerels with boiled corn, tuna, garlic wine marinated meat and grilled limpets are some of the delicacies you may taste here.

After a fantastic day, I left Porto Moniz with the certainty that this charming town will stay forever in my mind and I am sure that this is a common feeling among all visitors.
