One day in Oporto
One day in Oporto won’t be enough to discover this amazing city yet in this post i suggest some of the most iconic places you shouldn’t miss
Facing Douro River, Oporto is an historical city which origins go back to the VII a.C. century and that prospers since Roman times.
It has played a crucial role in the Portuguese history since its early stage; in fact, Portugal got its name from this amazing city of steep streets and hardworking people, proud of its past.
Oporto has so much to see that a one day visit won’t be enough and you will be willing to return as soon as possible. Yet, there are a few places you should not miss, even if you are staying for just a few hours.
The medieval borough, where the city’s Cathedral is to be found, is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO since 1996, thus it should be a mandatory stop of your itinerary.
Another must-visit for tourists is Avenida dos Aliados, the heart of the city avenue, dominated by the city hall building and the Clergy tower, Oporto’s ex-libris. Not far from here is Rua de Santa Catarina, the most commercial street of the city. On the way there you may want to make a stop at Mercado do Bolhão, a typical market full of fresh goods and cheered by the vendors’ cries.
However to enjoy the true atmosphere of Oporto Ribeira is the place to go. By the Douro River, this district is characterized by narrow and winding streets and its typical houses with coloured façades. At night Ribeira teems with life due to the amazing restaurants, outdoors cafes and bars as well as the most crowded night clubs.
If you are into culture Casa da Música should be on top of the list, due to the cultural events held every day as well as the exhibitions it offers.
Yet, on your one day in Oporto tour you should save a couple of hours to cross the river, to visit one of the several Port Wine cellars existing in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Last but not least, don’t leave Oporto without tasting a Francesinha, a true gastronomic treat disguised as a sandwich.
