According to Visit Madeira, the official site of Madeira Tourism, this year the Festival is going to take place between April 19th and 25th.
The city of Funchal blossoms with the arrival of spring and the streets are filled with an inebriating floral aroma that make this time of the year one of the most enchanting seasons to visit Madeira Island. To celebrate this magic that is in the air, was instituted the Flower Festival, a world famed event that has become one of the many ex-libris of Madeira and that lasts for a few days. This event attracts thousands of tourists to the island every year, willing to participate in a unique show of colour and beauty.
Flower Festival starts on Saturday morning with the Children’s Parade, on which, hundreds of children, dressed especially for the occasion, parade towards Praça do Município (The Town hall Square) where each one of them places a flower to build a flower mural, symbolically named the Wall of Hope.
On Sunday afternoon, around 4 pm takes place the highlight of the Festival, namely the Flower Parade, when over a thousand of marchers, wearing costumes referring to flowers, march through the main Funchal’s streets at the sound of music, along with several floats, combining numerous native flower species with creative blooming decorations, giving rise to an unforgettable scenery of colour, aromas and joy. Also to be remembered is the unrivaled beauty of the floral carpets set along the city’s main streets. Observing those delicate paper flowers it is impossible not to imagine all the hard work involved in its creation and not to realize that this could only be a work of passion and patience.
Besides these events Madeira’s Flower Festival is well known for the music concerts and folklore performances that offers as well as for the shop windows decoration and the Tropical Flowers Exhibition held in Largo da Restauração by local producers.
