Lisbon is Europe’s gateway to the world, and ships are welcome to its large port just like the days of Vasco da Gama. Nowadays Lisbon is one of the most charming European capitals.

Two thirds of Lisbon was hit by a 9.0 earthquake in 1755 and in a short time Lisbon was rebuilt with squares and broad boulevards on a progressive grid plan. Lisbon today is a charming city depicting the now and then.

Lisbon is Europe’s gateway to the world, and ships are welcome to its large port just like the days of Vasco da Gama. The tangled street plans were one of the surviving aspects of the earthquake and makes Alfama an old world playground of cobblestone. From the city centre Lisbon airport is around six miles. Renting a car at Lisbon airport is usually far quicker than taking a taxi or the aero-bus from the terminal building.

There are also several wonderful hotels that offer views onto the bay and are central to all amenities. Hotels in Lisbon such as the Olissippo Lapa Palace are one of the very best hotels offering five star friendly services. Another good choice is the Britania Hotel which has been ranked the number one hotel in Lisbon and has the very best boutiques. In addition there is also the Heritage Av Liberdade and the Altis Belem which provides good services and is ranked among the best.

Places to visit in Lisbon

One of the most photogenic places is Alfama, is 3 miles from Lisbon and is a must see. Other great attractions which are easy and quick to access with a rental car is the Oceanarium de Lisboa which has excellent specimens on view. The Gulbenkian museum is another great attraction and houses Egyptian sculptures, old masters paintings, and a wonderful collection of Persian art. This museum also houses two concert halls for performances such as ballet and music. I would also suggest a tour to visit the top 10 monuments in Lisbon.

An old fisherman’s village which still remains the pearl of Cascais, in the second half of the century became a European Royalty Riviera and is now a sought after tourist destination in Lisbon for its contemporary and modern art, beaches and historic walking areas. The Castelo de Sao Jorge was a 5th century Visigothic fort before the Moors invasion and is situated on top of the highest hill in Alfama Lisbon.

As opposed to having to depend on buses and trains Lisbon rental vehicles are far easier and less stressful when touring around Portugal. In order to get the most out of your holiday package and see all the famous attractions as well as get around in the evening to the lively clubs, pubs and restaurants car rental in Lisbon offers the best affordable deals. For those that enjoy art you view the collection at the Berardo Collection Museum which has a wide selection of both contemporary and modern art. The collection offers neo realism, digital art, kinetic art, photography and a host of other beautiful art pieces.

If you intend venturing further out from Lisbon, then it would be wise to make use of a hire car. This way you can take your time and stop over where ever you like to have lunch or joint the locals in the evening at one of the many entertainment pubs where you can savour fine Portuguese cuisine and hospitality.
