Fado Restaurants – Casas de Fado

Sr Fado
Clara Campos

A visit to Lisbon isn’t the same without a night in one of the many Fado restaurants (Casas de Fado) the Portuguese capital has to offer.

To fully enjoy Lisbon, your visit isn’t complete without a night in one of the many Fado restaurants (Casas de Fado) of the Portuguese capital as it is in these typical restaurants where fado is sung that the spirit of the ancient bohemian Lisbon is more alive.

Throughout the typical Lisbon districts such as Alfama, Mouraria or Bairro Alto there are innumerous places were you may listen to amateur fado singers in a relaxed, more popular and down-to-earth ambiance, while tasting the delicacies of the Portuguese gastronomy and enjoying a glass of wine – Portuguese wine of course!
In this sort of casas de fado you will experience the true soul of the early days of fado when the iconic Portuguese song was the expression of the pains of the less fortunate, like sailors and dockers. Be advice though that sometimes singers step spontaneously out of the audience directly to the stage so the quality of the voices isn’t always the best.

On the other hand, if are looking for assured quality, Lisbon traditional neighborhoods offer you also Casas de Fado where some of the best Fado singers charm both locals and tourists. Here, as the ambience is more exquisite, the service is more refined and the singers are far better, price is, of course, higher. Usually these Casas de Fado carry the tradition inside their walls and linked to the fado’s tradition and iconic fado’s personalities.
