Cabanas de Tavira, a secret refuge
Cabanas de Tavira is a charming fishing village with a sandy beach of warm waters, away from the crowds that invade Algarve every summer. It’s my refuge!
Cabanas de Tavira, recently elected the favourite Iberian beach by the readers of the Guardian, is today’s destination. It is said that we should never go back to a place where we have been happy to preserve memories and avoid disappointment. Well, today’s destiny is a vivid denial of this statement. Year after year I return to Cabanas de Tavira and I am never disappointed. In fact, this small fishing village near Tavira is one of my secret refuges on the Algarve, away from the crowds that invade this Portuguese region every summer.
There is something magical about the ritual on going aboard the small boat that crosses the Ria to reach the 7 km sandy island facing Cabanas. The tranquility of the landscape fills your heart and soul, while being rocked by the calm movement of the stream. It feels as if the crossing is thought to prepare you for the magnificence of the blue flag beach that is waiting for you on the other side.
When arriving the beach it is hard not to be impressed by the sea calm and transparency that allows you to discover shells of innumerous colors as well as small fishes swimming just besides you, enjoying the warm temperature of the water.
A 10 minutes walk on the beach is a worthwhile effort. You will discover a wild beach, forming small lagoons, housing little crabs during the low tide. The beauty surrounding you is overwhelming and a balm of energy.
However the charm of Cabanas de Tavira does not end on the beach. The village has excellent restaurants that serve the best products the sea has to offer like tuna fish, octopus or razor clams. O Ideal, O Pedro, O Grelha Peixe or A Noélia are not to miss spots for an unpretentious but unforgettable meal. As there is always a long line of hungry tourists at their doors, be sure to book your table in advance.
Cabanas de Tavira also provides good accommodation options. Besides the hotels available such as Golden Clube Resort, Cabanas Park Resort, Quinta Velha or Pedras da Rainha, you can also check the Internet for self catering apartments or houses for rental from private owners.
Next time you are planning your holidays, consider Cabanas de Tavira. I promise you won’t regret.
